1545–1700s

The mita and the silver mines

Chuño provisioned the forced-labour draft that fed Potosí's silver mines, where hundreds of thousands of Andean workers died. The potato's portability served conquest as readily as it served the Inca.

1800s

A dangerously narrow gene pool

Europe built its dependence on a handful of clones descended from a few shiploads of tubers. Clonal propagation means no genetic reshuffling — every plant in a field can be killed by the same pathogen.

1845–1852

An Gorta Mór

Ireland's poor lived on the Lumper potato. When blight struck, about one million died of starvation and disease and a million emigrated, while grain, cattle and butter continued to be exported under British land policy. Ireland's population is still below its 1841 level.

Clearance in the Highlands

Blight in Scotland compounded the Highland Clearances: destitute crofters were shipped to Canada and Australia under assisted-emigration schemes that were often coercive in practice.

With supply lines cut, the western Netherlands survived on rationed potatoes, sugar beet and tulip bulbs. Around 20,000 died; children born to starved mothers show measurable health effects decades later.
